got to the theatre too late for shaft 2019. devastating! thank god its summertime at the movies, which means there are plenty of remake/reboot/sequel opportunities at the local multiplex! childs play the remake is competently made, with aubrey plaza in various states of undress as andys hot mom and mark hamill acceptably replacing brad douriff as the voice of chucky. im a purist so i wasnt sure how the casting was going to hold up but it didnt offend me and the movie had some good individual kills, including a dude getting his face ripped off by a lawn aerator. and its only ninety minutes long!
however.
for a time i would spoil any and every movie that came out because i wasnt interested in waiting to see it to find out what happens. i spoiled maggie gyllenhaals death in the dark knight, the hitler clones in the boys from brazil, the thunder from down under in the crying game, etc. i havent done any of that lately though and have successfully avoided critics opinions as much as possible, and let me tell you with big franchises ending recently like avengers they were difficult to avoid. but every once and a while the cogs of hollywood promotion get my expectations psyched up for something that cant possibly deliver. when i see a movie, for example like the new godzilla, if the ads look like there will be apocalyptic carnage i want to see the apocalypse. i want tiny cgi bodies falling out of crumbling skyscrapers like some of the best shots from roland emmerich movies. instead, it insisted on the same bullshit that ruined the twenty fourteen movie where they explain away the empty streets by means of an evacuation. no thanks i want to see innocent civilians getting stepped on and picked up and nommed. i know that this isnt the kind of annihilation that is looked upon kindly in todays whitewashed society but its the movies. maybe ill learn something along the way but its primarily escapism.
childs play the remake suffers from expectation fatigue. curse me for reading ahead but most advance reviews praised the ending. the ending is great! the rest of the movie is bland but the last twenty minutes more then makes up for it! lies i tell you! the only way you will shock me now is if i get around to finally watching a serbian film, or if what they are hyping actually lives up to it. i saw the opportunity on the walls too. chucky crashes the day one release of the new buddi doll at a busy toy store, with andy and his friends in hot pursuit. he retrofits drone rotors with exacto blades and flies them right into the unsuspecting crowd. ample opportunity to quench my bloodlust, like that brilliant opening from ghost ship! not a chance. a couple of innocents are caught in the scuffle but otherwise an excellent genre conclusion is traded for an even more generic kids versus the bad guy one that the industry has been doing way too much of lately. an opportunity missed, but the other ninety percent is ok so its worth checking out on demand.
