Video: why does everyone have to be your friend?

A Visual Poem

Transcript:

it’s an abstraction
these tell-tale moments
these double entendres
that make up what’s left of you

why does everyone have to be your friend?

like a cowgirl you sink your spurs into the dance floor
you move your ass in jeans too small
to offer the support your blood cannot
all while you try to keep time
in heels too tight
to show off legs too far gone
even though your feet bleed
and your back breaks
and your hair tangles
and your smile
your eyes are like a lady hawk
peripherals like stereotypes
wrapped around your flabs
your drabs
your scabs
the hot burner and coals
you’ll never tell him what he doesn’t need to know

you get to him
his back is to you
you tap his shoulder and he swings around
like a celebrity guest cameo
you are thrown aback

he asks about your friend

who?

her
standing behind you
the one not looking
who doesn’t want to be found
who sits by the bar
wishing her man was there
